Supporting West Mercia Youth Through Reparation Projects

Under the regional mechanism of the DICM (West Mercia) Business social value is being harnessed across West Mercia as a support for young people through Reparation Projects. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and West Mercia Police are committed to building safer communities through the Safer West Mercia Plan (link).

Under the force Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments and Supply Chain Code of Conduct, police buyers will be working more closely with their supply chain to use the DICM (West Mercia) as the way to contractually harness social value as the way to support a range of strategically important, community-based initiatives.

One such project is run by the West Mercia Youth Justice Service (YJS)...

This project delivers court-ordered reparation activities for young people who have been involved in minor offences. These include carpentry-based projects where participants build bird boxes, wildlife homes, and other timber products for use across Wildlife Trust estates and local communities.

To grow this project and significantly reduce re-offending over the next 5 years within the region, helping young people develop practical skills they can use for their own personal needs or as part of employability development, an opportunity exists for businesses who supply the 3 counties of West Mercia to work with YJS.

Business suppliers can collaborate for social value with the YJS, under the DICM (West Mercia).

Resources provided as social value within a collaboration and linked to a supply contract can include:

  • Timber donations (e.g. pallets, offcuts, or surplus wood)
  • Tools and equipment
  • Volunteer time or training
  • Workshop space or facilities
  • Or any other opportunities that you could provide to support YJS.

Business suppliers and contract social value with YJS...

Through the creation of the DICM (West Mercia) social value marketplace the region's business suppliers to emergency services, councils, NHS and criminal justice services are able to forge impact collaborations with YJS for this key project.
